The Urban Jobs Task Force is hosting “From the Ground Up,” part of The Gifford Foundation’s “What If…” Film Series
When a community is devastated by destructive social forces or strangulated by economic disinvestment, its people must rely on their strengths to rebuild. Every community has ingenuity, determination, and an ability to work together. These are strengths. Through film clips that study the devastation of America's "Black Wall Street" in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Syracuse's 15th Ward, followed by a presentation from PUSH Buffalo about the grassroots organizing that has revitalized our sister city, we will learn and talk about how determination, creativity, and cooperation can lead to economic re-investment, resilience and sustainability.
Join us on Monday, October 16 at 6pm at Southwest Community Center, as the Urban Jobs Task Force facilitates a conversation to explore and understand what it means to rebuild a community "From the Ground Up".

The city of Syracuse, Department of Neighborhood and Business Development (NBD) has released the Community Development Block Grant, Community Based Development Organization Certification, Emergency Solutions Grant, HOME Investment Partnership Program and Community Housing Development Organization Certification and Operating funding applications on our website.
The funding cycle for these applications will be May 1, 2018 – April 30, 2019 (“Program Year 44”).

Group Workcamps Free Home Repair 2018
Group Workcamps® began in response to an incredible need. In July of 1976, more than 12 inches of rain fell in three hours near Loveland, Colorado...flooding the Big Thompson River. The river raged...destroying houses, washing away roads, and killing over 140 people. It was a tragic day for the people of the area.
In response, the staff of Group Magazine put out a call for help. Church youth groups were asked to come and rebuild local homes and the lives of those affected. Over 300 youth and their adult leaders showed up ready to serve the residents of the Big Thompson Canyon.
Since 1977, the organization has provided more than 6 million hours of volunteer service directly to people in need. Group Cares (a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization) works together with many types of partners to cosponsor volunteer service projects providing home repairs for elderly, disabled, or low- income residents.
A typical camp consists of approximately 300-400 youth and adult participants representing as much as 12,000 hours of volunteer labor. Participants pay a registration fee, which covers the cost of food, lodging, programming, insurance, and a portion of the project materials. All participants are matched within a small crew that typically consists of one adult and five youth. Youth groups are split up to work with participants from other groups providing them with the opportunity to make new friends from across the nation. They build wheelchair ramps, mend and build porches, paint, and perform other simple, yet meaningful, home repairs for those who need it most. Depending on the number of participants, they are able to complete work on approximately 65-70 homes that are selected by our local Cosponsors.
During camp the participants are housed in a local lodging facility. Participants gather together for large group meetings in the gym, eat in the cafeteria, shower in the locker rooms, and sleep in classrooms.

· Applications will only be accepted for home owner occupied homes
· Applications can be mailed or faxed
· PROJECT LABOR AND MATERIALS ARE COMPLETELY FREE
· Site surveyors will be around to inspect during the fall and winter
· April 2018 timeframe sites will be selected
· Projects to be completed summer 2018
· 30 Volunteers are needed to help facilitate various tasks for the youth/home repair projects

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The annual CNY Volunteer Fair Tuesday will feature more than 50 organizations seeking volunteers. The fair takes place Tuesday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on the third floor of Destiny USA's canyon area near BG Cowboys Saloon.
Assemblyman William Magnarelli will host the event, which is in its ninth year.
"This is a great opportunity for students who need community service credit, for those wanting to learn about potential job fields, or for anyone looking to get more involved in their community," Magnarelli said in a statement.
On-site organizations represent various interests, from animal care, helping the homeless, education organizations, helping domestic violence survivors, to health care fields.

Onondaga Citizens League Invites Public to Discuss:
“The State of the Community Engagement Infrastructure in CNY.”
SYRACUSE – The Onondaga Citizens League announces the kick-off of its 2017/18 study, "The State of the Community Engagement Infrastructure in CNY.”
Using community input, the study committee will look at the state of community engagement in our region – who is involved, who is not, and why? Is there a need for a more engaged citizenry in our region? Is it part of our civic responsibility to become involved in issues that affect us?
The first study session will be held at the Central Library Downtown, 447 S. Salina St., Syracuse, NY on Tuesday, September 26, from noon to 1:30 p.m. OCL's study sessions are free and open to the public. There is on-street parking or there is a lot on the corner of Salina and Onondaga Street. The lot is accessible by either Onondaga or Clinton Street. Please enter the library via Salina Street.
Several speakers will share their perspective on who/what inspired them to become activists for causes that affect all of us. They will give us tips on how to become more involved citizens and inspire us to become advocates for change.
Attendees are invited to bring a bag lunch. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.

The Onondaga Citizens League (OCL) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan citizen-based group designed to promote civic education and involvement in public affairs.
